LANGUAGE
German is a valued specialist area at Marmion Primary School and the language has been taught at the school for the last twenty-five years. Students from Year 2 to Year 6 receive one fifty minute lesson per week. Within the course, there is a strong emphasis on speaking and pronunciation. Oral work, songs and authentic material are used to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. Reading and writing are emphasised more in the upper years. Selected students or classes are chosen to participate in a German assembly each year, and cultural elements are also included, to give the students a better understanding of the German speaking people and the way that they live.

MUSIC
At Marmion we are giving our students the opportunity to experience Music as a tool of communication, a reflection of their culture and as method of expression that they can continue all their lives.
Children in Years 1 – 3 received 100 minutes of music lessons per week with a cross-arts (dance/drama/music) focus. All students from Years 4 through to Year 6 received 50 minutes of specialist music time per week. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that ranged from singing, playing multiple instruments, reading music, composing using a range of technologies, learning about different musical styles and genres and reflecting on their musical experiences.
Our Senior Choir is made up of between 70-80 students in Years 5 and 6 who rehearse from 8.00am to 9.00am each Wednesday morning. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn a variety of choral techniques, sing music in many different genres and work collaboratively to ensure a high level of performance.
Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) offer weekly lessons during school time for Violin, Viola, Cello, Clarinet and Trumpet. Each Friday morning our String Ensemble rehearses from 7.45am to 8.30am.
The focus for Music at Marmion is taken from the National Curriculum as developed by the Department of Education. The program aims to encourage children’s enjoyment of Music via movement, singing, playing instruments, listening to a variety of music, learning to read and write musical notation and composing using available instruments and technologies.
Junior Music lessons use a combination of Kodaly and Orff approach with a focus on tuned percussion, solfege and creativity. Students develop a sound understanding of beat, rhythm and simple pitch sets as well as learning music language to identify and describe the musical elements. Middle and upper primary Music lessons include ukulele, recorder, composing and arranging using IPads, traditional percussion instruments and also audio mixing and digital editing.
We have a highly supportive learning environemt made possible by the entire Marmion School Community and are fortunate to provide students with a vast array of opportunities to express themselves musically.
