Have you ever stopped to think about the amount of waste generated by Australians?
Australia is one of the most wasteful countries in the developed world. Every year, the waste we generate is growing at twice the rate of our population. That is certainly not sustainable and we urgently need to do something about it.
Through assemblies, school newsletters, PA announcements, and a sustainability notice board, our Eco Commandos will be researching and raising awareness about waste and encouraging students, teachers, parents and members of our local community to make small changes to help minimise the amount of waste we create.
- To promote the 4R’s – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle.
- A whole school approach to minimising waste.
- Raise Awareness of this global issue.
- Affect change.
Club members will also be involved in creating usable items with recycled materials. We have started making fantastic boomerang bags for our library! These have been created from old T-shirts that may otherwise have ended up in landfill. Our Boomerang bags will be kept in the library with Mrs Lamb and will be available for students to borrow if they forget to bring their library bag with them on library day. Once a student has finished using the bag, he/she can take it back to the library so it’s available for someone else to use. Hence, the name ‘Boomerang Bags.’ We hope our fellow students enjoy using these bags instead of plastic ones.
